Soul Food invests in a sustainable future with Blue Sky

MOAB, Utah  — Tamera (Gabrielle) Weaver understands that renewable power costs a little more, but she believes it’s an important investment.

“To me it’s like organic food,” she said. “I realize that it costs a little more, but by supporting it, I’m helping the industry grow.”

As owner of Soul Food, Moab’s new age metaphysical store, Gabrielle sells tools and accessories for a multitude of spiritual pathways. This includes self-help books, crystals, statues, incense, candles and jewelry. It even features a great, teak reclining Buddha in the window.

“I buy Blue Sky because I think we need power alternatives,” she said. “Driving past the huge wind turbines in California, it struck me that we should be doing more to build wind power generation on unused land. I want to support that idea.”

Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky gives customers a way to grow the demand for wind energy and take advantage of its environmental benefits. It is sold in 100-kilowatt-hour block increments for $1.95 each, in addition to a customer’s regular monthly electric bill.

Blue Sky’s energy is derived from wind power. Wind is an attractive form of energy generation because it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Wind produces no air pollutants, wastewater, smog or acid rain. Blue Sky helps spur renewable power development and brings additional amounts of clean, renewable energy into the power system.

The environmental impact of Soul Food’s Blue Sky purchase is significant: its purchase of 10 blocks per month offsets the release a ton of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which has the same benefit as planting more than 195 trees each month. Just one block of Blue Sky purchased each month for a year has the same environmental benefit of either not driving 2,500 miles or planting a half acre of trees.

“I like to support projects that support the environment,” Gabrielle said. “For example, we recently installed automatic faucets, and I'm amazed at how much water they save. They cost more at the outset, but they definitely save in the long run.”
