Tanger Outlet Centers becomes Utah’s first mall to buy renewable energy

PARK CITY, Utah — The Tanger Outlet Center in Park City is the first shopping mall in the state to buy Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky renewable energy. Eleven stores at the Park City shopping center are offsetting 15 percent of their electricity usage with wind power.

“The Tanger Outlet Center in Park City is proud to support the Utah Clean Energy Alliance and Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky wind energy program,” said Stanley K. Tanger, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, Inc. “We hope that our use of Blue Sky will lead the way in encouraging others to help our environment by using clean, renewable energy sources such as the wind to operate their homes and businesses.”

The Tanger Outlet Center, located at 6699 North Landmark Dr., is buying 131 blocks of renewable wind power every month. The environmental benefits of its purchase are significant: over 12 months, it is equivalent to planting 62 acres of trees or taking 27 cars off the road for a year.

Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky gives customers a way to grow the demand for wind energy and take advantage of its environmental benefits. Residential and business customers can buy Blue Sky in 100-kilowatt-hour block increments for $1.95 each, in addition to a customer’s regular monthly electric bill. Tanger is buying wind power through Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky QS option (Quantity Savings option), which allows large business customers to buy renewable energy for less, providing they purchase at least 101 blocks of Blue Sky per month for a year.

Blue Sky’s energy is derived from wind power. Wind is an attractive form of energy generation because it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Wind produces no air pollutants, wastewater, smog or acid rain. Blue Sky helps spur renewable power development and brings additional amounts of clean, renewable energy into the power system.

Tanger became aware of the Blue Sky program because of challenges by Park City and Moab. Last year, the City Council of Park City voted unanimously to support renewable power by launching the Blue Sky Community Challenge.

The Park City Blue Sky Community Challenge’s original goal was to boost Park City’s Blue Sky customer participation to five percent. Today the community is working to increase participation to 15 percent. Currently, 1,310 residential customers and 104 area businesses are enrolled – or nearly 10 percent of the community – compared to 253 when the challenge began in November 2003. The number of signups is the result of grassroots initiatives, the Leadership Group X, Recycle Utah, Utah Clean Energy and Rocky Mountain Power representatives.

Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, Inc., (NYSE:SKT) a publicly traded REIT, presently has ownership interests in or management responsibilities for 33 shopping centers in 22 states coast-to-coast, totaling approximately 8.7 million square feet, leased to over 1900 stores that are operated by over 400 different store brands. Blue Sky is one of the nation’s most popular green programs. The U.S. Department of Energy ranked Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program second in the nation for customers enrolled in a renewable power program; and third in the amount of renewable power sold.
