National Frozen Foods takes lead role in renewable energy with Blue Sky commitment

ALBANY, Ore. — The Albany National Frozen Foods plant and Blue Sky renewable energy go together like peas and carrots.

The facility packs agricultural products from the Willamette Valley for sale in supermarkets nationwide and has committed to purchase 505 megawatt hours of renewable energy each year. That is roughly the amount of energy used in one year by 40 typical Oregon homes.

"Being sustainable has always been part of what we do," said Bill O’Bryan, general manager of the Albany facility. "But we haven’t always put that name on it. Manufacturers like us are always looking for the most efficient and effective way to do things. Our customers such as Sysco and Wal-Mart want to know what we’re doing to be more sustainable, and participating in Blue Sky is a significant way to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability."

Pacific Power’s Blue Sky program gives all customers, large and small, a way to grow the demand for renewable energy and take advantage of its environmental benefits.

Blue Sky energy comes from renewable sources such as wind power. Wind is an attractive form of energy generation because it produces no air pollutants, wastewater or other emissions. Blue Sky helps spur renewable power development and supports additional amounts of clean, renewable energy.

National Frozen Foods’ commitment to renewable energy over the course of a year will avoid putting 505 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and is the environmental equivalent of planting more than 99,000 trees or not driving approximately 1.1 million miles.

"National Frozen Foods’ commitment shows what a single company can do when they make renewable energy a priority," said Pat Reiten, president of Pacific Power. "This level of participation not only provides substantial benefits for the environment but also goes a long way in bringing positive economic support to the region. We value our customer relationship with National Frozen Foods, and we’re delighted to see them become a leader in renewable energy, setting an example for other businesses to follow."

Besides participating in Blue Sky, National Frozen Foods also works toward sustainable goals in its recycling of packaging materials, from cardboard to polystyrene to wood pallets. In addition, the company has implemented heat reclamation projects at its plant and constantly works to conserve water.

"Blue Sky fits right in with all our other efforts to be more sustainable," said O’Bryan.

Participation in Blue Sky is affordable. Pacific Power sells Blue Sky in 100- kilowatt-hour block increments for $1.95 each, in addition to a customer’s regular monthly electric bill. Buying just one block of Blue Sky a month for a year has the same environmental benefit of not driving 2,500 miles or planting a half acre of trees. Large customers can buy renewable power in bulk at a discount through Blue Sky QS.
