Blue Sky Program Provides Renewable Energy Certificates for 2009 Moab Folk Festival
November 06, 2009
MOAB, Utah – Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky renewable energy program is offsetting the environmental impact of electricity use at the 2009 Moab Folk Festival through the purchase of renewable energy certificates. Offsets provided by Blue Sky enable the Festival to avoid the emission of four tons of carbon dioxide into the air. That’s the equivalent of planting more than 360 trees, or not driving a car 8,848 miles.
“This is the seventh consecutive year in which the Moab Folk Festival will have emission-free electricity use thanks to renewable energy offsets provided by Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program,” said Deb Dull, Rocky Mountain Power customer and community manager. “Support for renewable energy has always been strong in the Moab and Castle Valley communities, which together were designated as the nation’s first official EPA Green Power Community by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2004.”
The 2009 Moab Folk Festival runs Nov. 6 through Nov. 8. Information is available online at www.moabfolkfestival.com. In addition to the three-day festival, Blue Sky also is offsetting electricity use at several associated venues prior to and after the festival.
Blue Sky provides Rocky Mountain Power customers an easy way to support wind-powered generation and other renewable energy facilities in the region. Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky is sold in 100 kilowatt-hour block increments for $1.95 per month. Bulk purchases may qualify for a lower price through the Blue Sky Quantity Savings option.
When a customer enrolls in Blue Sky, Rocky Mountain Power purchases Green-e Energy-certified renewable energy certificates on their behalf from wind energy facilities in the region. Blue Sky funds also help support the development of smaller projects in local communities that can include wind, solar, geothermal, low-emission biomass or other certified renewable energy sources. About 31,260 Rocky Mountain Power customers in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho currently buy Blue Sky renewable energy.
Separate from Blue Sky, Rocky Mountain Power is investing in cost-effective renewable energy to serve its customers through company-owned generation and renewable energy purchases. Electricity from wind energy facilities increases the diversity of Rocky Mountain Power’s generation portfolio, which also includes coal, natural gas, hydroelectric and geothermal sources. Through the Blue Sky program, the company and its customers are working together to support the development of even more renewable energy resources.
