The Substation Apprentice is an employee who is in training to become a Substation Journeyman. A Substation Apprentice will gain a working knowledge of substation equipment, electrical wiring and testing through the program.
Substation Apprentices assist Substation Journeyman with installing, maintaining, testing, adjusting, troubleshooting and repairing substation equipment which includes, but is not limited to, transformers, regulators, load tap changers, circuit breakers, circuit switchers, motor-operated and manual switches, bus work, electrical wiring, battery banks and chargers, and substation structures. They operate substation equipment, including the switching of the electrical network and grounding of de-energized equipment. Apprentices perform substation apparatus testing such as power factor, transformer turns ratio, insulation resistance, ductor, battery load, oil sampling, and other analytical tests under the direction of a Substation Journeyman.

Courses taken at institutions other than Salt Lake Community College will be mutually approved on a case by case basis. Electrically qualified journeymen whose qualifications can be verified through documentation and/ or assessment will meet the course work requirement outlined above.
